2016 was a fantastic year for Verifavia, with several opportunities for new partnerships, learning, and growth. Following a strong first quarter, we launched Verifavia Shipping (Hellas), which enabled us to expand our MRV services into the Greek and Cypriot shipping community. At the same time, we also welcomed Nikolas Theodorou as managing director for the Athens-based team.

Our team rapidly grew in strength, with the appointment of three new team members; Stylianos Smyrlakis joined the Athens team as technical expert and MRV auditor, bringing with him over 40 years of working experience from several sectors of shipping; Islam Abd-el-Azim, a former marine engineer and seafarer, joined us as a shipping technical expert and MRV auditor; Yuvraj Thakur, a former marine engineer and seafarer with five years of experience will be primarily focused on increasing our presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Yuvraj will also be involved in EU MRV audits, IT system certifications, and several other technical and commercial activities.

By invitation of the European Commission, I have been privileged to participate as an active member of the Commission’s groups of experts on EU MRV, under the European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF). I was also appointed Task Leader of the Commission's Task Force on the verification of the emissions report, responsible for drafting the relevant guidance document, and have been an active member of the task forces on the preparation and assessment of the Monitoring Plan.

With the growth of the team, and my continued participation in several task forces, we are confident that we are well set to fulfil the MRV requirements of shipping companies.

In 2016, we completed several EU MRV GAP-Analysis audits and ICT certifications, including for Greek-based NEDA, Dynacom, DYNAMARINe, and SetelHellas, as well as for maritime monitoring specialist KROHNE Marine.

To culminate a fruitful year, we signed a strategic partnership with the International Naval Surveys Bureau (INSB Class), which will see INSB Class customers benefit from our independent EU MRV verification services from 2017 onwards.

Looking ahead to an EU MRV year

2017 will be an exciting year for Verifavia Shipping, as our business continues to expand. We will continue to work diligently with ship owners and operators ahead of the first EU MRV legal deadline in August – to ensure they have the right processes and systems in place to achieve compliance.

With over 12,000 vessels requiring MRV compliance, our work starts now. We are on track to be among one of the first fully accredited global verifiers entrusted with partnering with shipping companies on all matters relating to EU MRV verification.

As part of our ongoing efforts to instil owners and operators with the confidence that the right systems, capabilities, and understanding are in place to efficiently achieve compliance, we continue to host free EU MRV seminars and webinars. The sessions enable our team of qualified MRV experts to offer practical guidance on navigating the requirements of the EU MRV regulation. Details of upcoming events can be found on our website.
