ABB adds Verifavia-Certified EU MRV module to its offering

ABB announced that it has added a Verifavia-certified module to its decision software suite, enabling customers to monitor their emissions in accordance with the European Union’s (EU’s) Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation.

ABB’s MRV module has been independently certified by Verifavia, as a tool to monitor all parameters to comply with the EU’s MRV regulation requirements. The system follows requirements set out in Regulation (EU) N° 2015/757, the associated Delegated and Implementing Acts and the ISO IEC 25051 standard on software.

Emissions verification moves ahead

In March 2017, emissions verification company Verifavia was accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) as a global verifier for EU MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) services. Shortly afterwards, the company recieved a second accreditation from France's national accreditation body Cofrac - making Verifavia Shipping the first and only global EU MRV verifier with dual accreditation.

With both the UKAS and Cofrac accreditations, Verifavia can both assess monitoring plans and verify carbon emission reports under EU MRV, which comes into force next year, for ‘any ship anywhere in the world, regardless of country of ownership, flag state, or class,’ the company states.

Since gaining accreditation, Verifavia Shipping now has 25 clients, and over 400+ ships to assess & verify.

EU MRV Implementation

Nikolas Theodorou, Managing Director, Verifavia Shipping (Hellas), presented at the 2017 GREEN4SEA Conference, focussing on the “EU MRV implementation”. Explaining the process of creating and approving a monitoring plan (MP), he reminded conference delegates that the MP is a mandatory requirement according to Article 6 of the EU Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Regulation, and that it must be submitted to an independent accredited verifier before 31st August 2017 for assessment.

The plan which compiles all the information on how the ship’s MRV system works, must be complete, accurate, relevant, and compliant. Mr. Theodorou added that Verifavia Shipping is now offering a free use “Extranet” to facilitate a straightforward, accurate, seamless, and smooth assessment experience.
