LONDON & BREVIK: Verifavia, the world’s leading emissions verification company for the transport sector, has fully certified maritime monitoring specialist, KROHNE Marine’s EcoMATE™ MRV against the European Union’s (EU) Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation requirements.

Shipping companies operating in the EU have just eight months until the August 2017 deadline to prepare plans to monitor and report their carbon emissions. Adopted last year, EU MRV creates an EU-wide legal framework for the monitoring, reporting and verification of CO2 emissions from maritime transport. Specifically designed to assist shipping companies in complying with the regulation by monitoring bunkering and fuel consumption, EcoMATE™ MRV has been independently verified in terms of process and functionality.

EcoMATE™ MRV enables shipowners to monitor all vessel types within the fleet with a single integrated tool. It accommodates both manual and online data entry to monitor operational data per voyage, conduct data quality checks and validations, and generate annual reports on a per vessel basis.

Julien Dufour, CEO, Verifavia Shipping, commented:

“Focused on process and functionality, our team of verification experts conducted a thorough review of the EcoMATE™ MRV system against the requirements of the EU MRV Regulation 2015/757. We used the ISO standards 25051 on software engineering and 17065 on product certification. Our collaboration with KROHNE Marine was very efficient and professional and we have every confidence that the EcoMATE™ MRV system will accurately and transparently support shipping companies in complying with the MRV regulation.”

MRV regulation will see the EU collect and make publicly available data for over 12,000 vessels calling at EU ports on or after 1st January 2018 to load or unload cargo, or embark or disembark passengers for commercial purposes. To support monitoring and reporting that satisfies compliance requirements, it is recommended that owners and operators choose IT solutions that are fully certified.

Hasse Hogner, Managing Director, KROHNE Marine, commented:

“Our EcoMATE™ MRV system was specifically designed to improve energy efficiency reporting. Based on our robust and accurate Coriolis mass-flowmeters and an extension of our established EcoMATE™ system, the software will take care of data acquisition, logging, calculations, monitoring and reporting. By simplifying data input and automating the calculation of emission and efficiency data, as well as reporting, EcoMATE™ MRV provides a simple and reliable solution to support compliance.”

Although designed as an automated system using flow as input, the EcoMATE™ MRV offers the flexibility of starting with only the IT solution using manual input according to methods A or B of the EU MRV Regulation 2015/757. This can later be upgraded with mass-flowmeters for compliance with method C. In addition, existing volumetric flowmeters can be used as input for the automatic system, for minor fuel consumers.

According to the EU MRV regulation, shipping companies with vessels exceeding 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) and calling at an EU port on or after January 1st 2018 for commercial purposes must report fuel consumption and carbon emissions on all voyages, as well as specific time and consumption while at berth. Additional required information includes distance travelled, time spent at sea, details of the cargo carried, transport work and average energy efficiency expressed in fuel consumption or carbon emissions per distance or per transport work. Vessels will also be required to carry a document of compliance issued by an accredited MRV verifier.
