Only CO2 to be monitored from ships

MEPs have voted to reject a proposal to monitor nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur (SOx) from ships. Monitoring of CO2 will begin shortly under new European Union legislation.

Under the 2008 emissions trading scheme (ETS) legislation, the Commission was obliged to put forward a proposal last year to include CO2 emissions from ships. However with the ongoing controversy over inclusion of aviation in ETS, the Commission has only decided to monitor CO2.
